We look forward to working with them in this new capacity."

Of Lawsuits and Press Releases

Over the past several weeks, I have been trying to sort out my feelings concerning the lawsuit Freedom Scientific has filed against GW Micro over placemarkers on the Internet. The foremost emotion I have experienced is sadness. It is not often that a press release from a screen reader developer makes me sad. Usually, I smile when a new release of a screen reader comes out. I eagerly await the myriad of demonstrations and interviews touting new features. Occasionally I smile when a screen reader developer sponsors audio description of a TV show or participates in an episode of Home Makeover. Sadness is an emotion I experience less frequently. I dread the day that Fox News does a short piece on two screen reader developers suing one another over a feature that makes using the Internet easier for blind people. Another emotion I have been experiencing is anger—anger that we even have to talk about this at all; anger that I even care about patent infringement and HTML tags; anger that support lists are spending more time belittling the competition than dealing with real questions concerning how to use their favorite screen reader.
The last emotion I have been experiencing lately is fear. The stakes are really high for all of us—the developers and the users alike. This is no game and it’s not a TV show where everything will turn out right in the end; it’s reality in the most brutal sense of the word.
Everyone reading this probably has an opinion regarding who should or who will win this lawsuit if it ever goes to court. I am no different. I would submit for your consideration, however, the possibility that, in the end, nobody will win. That, my friends, is a truly sobering thought.

GW Micro Response to Freedom Scientific Lawsuit

Fort Wayne, Indiana, August 15, 2008 -- GW Micro, Inc., a Fort Wayne, Indiana-based company dedicated to providing high quality adaptive technology solutions for blind and visually impaired individuals, announced today that it has received notice of a patent infringement lawsuit brought by Freedom Scientific, Inc., the self-described "world leader in technology-based solutions for people with visual impairments."  The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court, Middle District of Florida, alleging infringement of U.S. Patent No. 6,993,707 for a "Document Placemarker."  GW Micro has reviewed the claim and believes it is overreaching and not consistent with what Freedom Scientific told the Patent Office when obtaining its patent. GW Micro intends to defend itself vigorously and expects to prevail in court.

"As many of our users know, our screen reader -- Window-Eyes -- has had the capability of returning to a specific line within a webpage since version 3.1, which was released over nine years ago, well before Freedom Scientific's alleged invention," said Dan Weirich, GW Micro's Corporate President.  Weirich went on to note that, "The implication in a recent Freedom Scientific press release that GW Micro is 'benefit[ing] from [Freedom Scientific's] investment at no charge' is simply not accurate nor in line with GW Micro's tradition of success and fair play."  Finally, Weirich concluded, "We will aggressively defend both our legal position and our place in the assistive technology community."

Stream News Wire: Software 2.0 Re-Release

Dear Victor Reader Customer:

This is to announce that the re-release of Stream 2.0 is now available for download. The new version is 2.0.6 and can be downloaded from:
http://www.humanware.com/en-canada/support/vr_stream_software

There you will find 3 choices for the English version 2.0 with Samantha, Tom, or Daniel text-to-speech voices. The Release Notes for 2.0.6 are the same as for the original version 2.0.3 and are also available on the above page. The Release Notes explain how to install the software and list in detail all new features and improvements. Briefly,to install follow these steps:

- Download the software zip file from the above link

- Unzip the single UPG upgrade file from the zip file. You do not need special unzip software. Simply press Enter to open the zip file and you can then select the UPG file.

- Copy this UPG file to the root of your Stream SD card.

- Disconnect the Stream from the computer, connect it to AC power and turn it on.

- The Stream will automatically start the update process which takes about 1 minute during which time it will announce intermittent "please Wait" messages. The Stream will power off when the new software is installed.

- You may then remove the UPG file from the SD card.

After the new software is installed, the Release Notes document will also be available in a HumanWare sub-folder of your Text Bookshelf so you may read the Release Notes with your Stream. It is in html format on the Stream so you can navigate it by any of heading levels 1, 2, or 3.

This version corrects the issues with NISO e-text talking book formats where Fast Forward was causing the Stream to shutdown and where page navigation was not working. Examples of NISO e-text books are the Stream built-in User Guide, NFB newspapers, and Bookshare.org books.

Following are important points regarding this new version 2.0.6 release.

1. Audible Bookmarks
For future improvements, Audible has changed their playback engine and this new engine is included in Version 2.0. It does not affect how you listen or navigate in Audible books but it required a change to the way Stream identifies Audible books in the Stream's bookmark database. This will result in the loss of reading position and bookmarks saved in version 1.2. Prior to installing you may wish to note the elapsed reading time position in your Audible books so after installing you can then use the Go To Time function to quickly return to your reading position. Subsequent Audible book reading positions and bookmarks will be maintained.

2. INFO key Announcement of SD Space Remaining
After the original 2.0.3 release , we received reports that SD space remaining does not report correctly on all cards. We investigated this and found that some cards have incorrect value for total space usage but it is not clear why. It is related to Windows and/or Linux not updating this value after adding or removing files. We left the feature in as it seems to report accurately in most cases. It is not specific to any brand of card or size of card. We were able to correct one card by reformatting and re-transferring the files but it is not clear this is always the solution. Also, if the space used has an incorrect value it does not appear there is any other problem with the data on the card. We will investigate an alternative method to reporting SD space for a future release.

3. Recording Audio Bookmarks
In Stream 2.0 there is a bug whereby audio bookmarks can only be recorded by pressing and holding the Record key while you voice your recording. The single press at start of recording and second press at end of recording does not work. . This will be corrected on the next version. For recording audio notes, both methods still work.

We appreciate your patience over the past two weeks while we addressed the NISO text book playback issues and we hope you will enjoy the many new features and improvements in version 2.0.6.

Thank you,

The HumanWare Team

games. These include trivia, Name That Tune, and several other great games. You will
also find accessible greeting cards, radio stations, and a whole host of other fun
things to pass the time. This website is totally self-voicing and does not require
the use of a screen reader. The UK Audio Network is located at

comments: Klango is a free audio player for Windows. Like Windows Media Player, it
can play formats such as wav, mp3 and wma. However, Klango Player is unique.
First, the program is self-voicing. No screen reader is needed. Klango Player uses
any Sapi 5 or Sapi 4 voices installed on your computer. Sapi 5 is preferred. Klango
makes Sapi5 voices speak from different speakers, depending on what section of a
menu the user is in. According to the documentation, Sapi4 voices have problems speaking
from different sound card speakers.
The second reason Klango is unique is that it integrates a social aspect. There is
a forum where any registered user can post messages. Each user has a microblog and
can send private messages to each other.
Although Klango Player is currently in Beta, the developers stated on the forum that
Klango will remain free.

Using Blogger With Window-Eyes 7 Beta 1

As I type this, I am using beta 1 of Window-Eyes 7.0. I found it impossible to navigate the text of entries I typed while using Window-Eyes 6.1 with Blogger and was forced to use another screen reader. As I type this, I am able to move around successfully with beta 1 of Window-Eyes 7 and hear what I have typed. The new navigation commands on the Internet make Window-Eyes 7 as pleasant to use on the Net as the competition. There are still a few pages where other screen readers work better on the Net, and GW Micro is well aware of the work that needs to be done in this area. It is a pleasure to use Winamp and Skype with this new version of the product, and I haven't even begun to play with the other sixty-some scripts on
Scripts Central. Stay tuned.

back to discuss the product and to get feedback from private beta users and
scripters on the new version. Jamal Mazrui has written a significant amount
of scripts for the 7.0 product and he will be here to talk about the many
things he has developed. I will discuss the newest refinements to the
Winamp scripts that will be available including features that could replace
the ACB Radio Tuner for Winamp users that use Window-Eyes as well as much
improved access to the Auto-Tagging capabilities of Winamp. Aaron and Doug
will talk all about the GW Toolkit scripting library, the AutoComplete
script, the progress indicator script, the VirtualView script, the Weather

Window-Eyes 7.0 Beta 1 Is Now Available!

From: aaron@gwmicro.com [mailto:aaron@gwmicro.com]
Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2008 12:33 PM
To: gw-info@gwmicro.com
Subject: Window-Eyes 7.0 Beta 1 Is Now Available!

After much anticipation, Window-Eyes 7.0 Beta 1 is now available.  Window-Eyes 7.0 Beta 1 offers the latest advancements in screen reading technology, including full Unicode support, new scripting functionality, web browsing enhancements, a new synthesizer, and much more.

Full Unicode support means the ability to work with more international languages. Web browsing enhancements mean easier navigation between controls, and the ability to add placemarkers that can remember places on a webpage even when the webpage changes. ECI Eloquence 6.1 is now available as yet another speech option. Other enhancements like speed increases for list views, the system tray, and error reporting, being able to increase and decrease the speech rate during read to end, new options for keyboard voice interruptability, and numerous bug fixes make Window-Eyes 7.0 Beta 1 a welcome update.

The most notable enhancement in Window-Eyes 7.0 Beta 1, however, is scripting. Window-Eyes scripting is unparalleled in its design and implementation.  Rather than require a scripter to learn a proprietary language, Window-Eyes 7.0 Beta 1 allows a scripter to choose from a number of standard computer languages for writing scripts.  This means that more people will be able to take advantage of Window-Eyes scripting, and ultimately more accessibility to more software applications. Access all Window-Eyes features and settings, all operating system windows and properties, create custom accessible dialogs for user interaction with power and ease, and more.

To make scripts easily accessible and encourage script development, GW Micro has created a centralized script repository called Script Central (www.gwmicro.com/sc). Script Central provides script developers with the tools to distribute their scripts, and provides scripts users the tools to download, comment, rate and track favorite scripts.  The GW Micro forums (www.gwmicro.com/forum) have also been enhanced for general script discussions, script requests, script announcements, and much more. While we encourage everyone to take advantage of Script Central, Window-Eyes scripts can be hosted anywhere and distributed by anyone.

Read more about all of the features Window-Eyes 7.0 Beta 1 has to offer, and download your copy, at www.gwmicro.com/beta.

Review For VIP MUD Version 1.0

Reviews For VIP MUD version 1.0
Average Rating: 5 Based On 1 Reviews

Date: June 16, 2008, 12:21:02pm

user: JamiePauls
computer: 2.66GHz Pentium 4 512MB RAM
operating system: Windows XP Home
screen reader: Jaws 9.0, Window-Eyes 6.1
rating: 5
comments: I have recently been playing with VIP Mud from GMA Games. MUD stands for multiuser dungeon. MUDs are similar to text adventure games except that they are played on the Internet and often involve game play with other people. Although many muds involve magic and other Dungeons and Dragons elements, not all do and the VIP MUD documentation gives some resources for finding muds. It goes without saying that VIP mud is designed for visually impaired users as are all GMA games. Visit magames.com for a 30-day demo of this $30 game. Incidentally, the game can be played indefinitely for free albeit with some options missing. A screen reader is not required, but you can use your screen reader of choice while working in VIP Mud.

New AccessWatch Tutorial Released

Over the many years that I have been a part of mailing lists for the blind,
one topic that comes up over and over again deals with the need to burn CDs.
It is with this thought in mind that I created the Nero 8 tutorial. Nero 8
is a very popular mainstream program that happens to be quite useable by
visually impaired people. This six lesson, one hour and ten minute tutorial
discusses the basics of acquiring, installing, and using Nero 8. Topics
include burning a data CD, burning an audio CD, copying a CD, and getting
help. The cost of this tutorial is just $9.95. If you use Pay Pal to make
your purchase, you will be able to instantly download the tutorial and begin
using it immediately.

To purchase the tutorial, visit the following URL
http://www.accesswatch.info
and jump to the AccessWatch Tutorials heading at heading level 3. You will find the Nero Tutorial directly under that heading at heading level 4. Thanks.

Stream News Wire - English U.K. Daniel TTS Voice

Dear Victor Reader Stream Customer:

An alternative Stream software with the English U.K. male (Daniel) TTS voice is now available for download at:

http://www.humanware.com/en-canada/support/victor_reader_stream

This alternative version 1.2 software has a male TTS English U.K. voice (Daniel) and can be downloaded to replace the software with the female Samantha voice currently shipped on all English Streams. The Daniel voice will be shipped with future U.K. Streams. If you wish to change back to Samantha female TTS voice you can download and re-install the alternative UPG from the same page.

The functionality of the software is the same for both downloads. Only the TTS voice differs. The complete list of new features for version 1.2 and the installation instructions can be found in the What's New document in the documentation list on the same above web page. This support page also has links to listen to all Vocalizer TTS voices.

To summarize the Stream software Installation:

- download the zip file with your choice of TTS voice

- Unzip the single UPG upgrade file. You do not require special unzip software with Windows XP or Vista. Simply press Enter on the downloaded zip file and the UPG file will be shown. You can then copy the UPG file to the clipboard and paste it into the root of the Stream SD card.

- Insert the card into the Stream, connect the Stream to AC power, and turn it on.

- The Stream will recognize the special UPG file and initiate the upgrade process. Audio messages will inform you of the start and end of the update process.

- Remove the UPG file from your SD card after updating.

Thank you.

Thirty-Six Subscribers To The AccessWatch Blog

I am about ready to leave town for a couple of days and I decided to check
my Feed Burner stats to see how many people had subscribed to the
AccessWatch Blog via Feed Burner. I was pleased to see that there are now 36
subscribers. When I first started podcasting under the AccessWatch name, I
used Libsyn. It became increasingly difficult to write good show notes using
that service so I tried Live Journal for a while. Either it wasn't as
powerful as I wanted it to be or I just never got the hang of using it. I
moved on to Word Press. I liked Word Press a lot, but I was unable to blog
via e-mail which is exactly what I am doing now. Four blog hosts in about as
many years is probably too many, so I hope to stay with Blogger for a while.
I never did get Word Press and Feed Burner to play nicely together which
would have made the change from Live Journal to Word Press easier for
everyone. Now that I have an easy-to-use blogging platform and the ability
to point Feed Burner to the blog, I am happy. In reading the Blind
Confidential posts, I see that Chris makes reference to needing to get past
visual verification to post with Blogger. I have never had that issue and am
wondering why it isn't an issue for me. I assume he has some security
settings set different than I do. If anyone knows the answer to that
question, please leave a comment. Have a great week.

AccessWatch Has A New Blog Home

Greetings AccessWatch Users:

I am writing today to let you know that AccessWatch is switching to a new blog host. As many of you know, I have been a WordPress user for quite some time and find the service to be quite good. One of the features that I really wanted in the service was the ability to post blogs by e-mail. To the best of my knowledge, this service is not available from within WordPress. I have been aware for some time that it is possible to do this with Blogger. Yesterday I drug out the book from National Braille Press entitled "blog On" and read the section on Blogger. After determining that it was quite easy to use, or at least as easy as any other blogging platform, I decided to move AccessWatch over to Blogger. I hope that e-mail alerts such as this one will automatically get posted to the blog. Also, since quite a few people in the blind community use Blogger, I figure I should be able to get quite a bit of help with it if needed. You may subscribe to the blog by visiting

http://accesswatch.blogspot.com

and you can subscribe to the RSS feed right from the blog. If there are any Blogger experts reading this e-mail, I'd like to visit with you. You can e-mail me at the following e-mail address:

jamiepauls@gmail.com

Some of you may have my Skype info as well.

Please let me know if you enjoy the blog.

Test Post

This is my first post using Blogger. I am intrigued with the possibility of using e-mail to post to this blog. As I write this, I am discovering that Window-Eyes does not read well at all as I compose this, but Jaws does just fine. Stay tuned.
